چکیده
The Maloti-Drakensberg (MD) is the largest and highest-elevation mountain system in southern Africa. Covering 40,000 km2 reaching 3500 m, MD provides a range of ecosystem services (ES) to entire African region—benefitting diverse users extending well beyond mountains. Rapid socioecological change threatens provision ES presents multidimensional challenges sustainable development. However, continued land degradation persisting socioeconomic problems indicate that development policy has not been effective tackling these issues. In this paper, multidisciplinary literature review forms basis discussion which takes an framing scrutinise social, political, economic cultural issues study area. Three critical management systems are presented, their associated discussed, namely, water transfer, rangelands conservation tourism. particular, diversity uses values considered. results reveal main drivers unsustainable highlight important information gaps.

The Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains are southern Africa’s highest and give rise to South Africa’s largest river, the Orange-Senqu. At Melikane Rockshelter in highland Lesotho (*1800 m a.s.l.), project AMEMSA (Adaptations to Marginal Environments in the Middle Stone Age) has documented a pulsed human presence since at least MIS 5. Melikane can be interrogated to understand when and why early modern...

Introduction Cervical cancer remains the second most common cancer among women worldwide and the most common cancer amongst black African women in South Africa. Annually there are 500 000 cases of cervical cancer worldwide, of which the mortality is about 50%. This is largely due to presentation at a late stage. Lack of availability of treatment facilities may be another factor contributing to ...
متن کاملThe Maluti Mystery revisited: Taxonomy of African River Frogs (Pyxicephalidae, Amietia) on the Drakensberg Mountains in southern Africa.
The taxonomy of two similar frogs from the top of the Drakensberg escarpment, the Maluti River Frog and the Phofung River Frog is not settled. I examine the relevant types and type descriptions, and discover a number of errors in the literature. Some of the recent taxonomic changes were found to be unsupported. The Maluti River Frog is assigned to Amietia vertebralis (Hewitt, 1927), and the Pho...

Bracken fern is one of the major invasive plants distributed all over the world currently threatening socio-economic and ecological systems due to its ability to swiftly colonize landscapes. The study aimed at reviewing the progress and challenges in detecting and mapping bracken fern weeds using multispectral remotely sensed data. Evidence from literature have revealed that traditional methods...
